BLS for Healthcare Provider Pre-course Study Guide

If you are registered to attend our BLS CPR Renewal class in Concord, you should spend a few minutes to study before your course. The American Heart Association Basic Life Support for the Healthcare Provider has a 25 question written test at the end of the training.

Compressions to Breaths Ratio for Single Rescuer CPR

  • Adults: 30:2
  • Infants and Children: 30:2

Compressions to Breaths for 2 Person CPR

  • Adults: 30:2
  • Infants and Children: 15:2

Rescue Breathing

  • Adults: 1 breath every 5-6 seconds
  • Infants and Children: 1 breath every 3-5 seconds
  • Advanced Airway: 1 breath every 6-8 seconds

Bag Valve Masks
Bag valve masks are not recommended for single rescuer CPR. They are better to use when performing 2 person CPR. Pocket masks, mouth to mouth breathing are better if performing single rescuer CPR.

Choking for Adults

  1. Ask victim if they are choking.
  2. If they cannot speak or breath perform abdominal thrusts.
  3. Continue until object is removed or victim becomes unconscious.
  4. If unconscious, start CPR.

Infant Choking

  1. Perform 5 back blows and 5 chest thrusts
  2. If baby becomes unconscious, start CPR
